Academic Foundation

Christoph Franz completed his industrial engineering studies at the Technical University of Darmstadt, where he also earned a Ph.D. in economic sciences. His educational background extends to international institutions, including the École Centrale de Lyon and Emlyon Business School. He furthered his expertise through post-doctorate research conducted at the University of California, Berkeley.

Aviation Leadership

Franz joined Lufthansa in 1990, initially working within the office of then-CEO Jürgen Weber during the airline's post-Gulf War recovery. He later served as CEO of Swiss International Air Lines from 2004 until 2009. In 2011, he returned to Lufthansa to serve as CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, succeeding Wolfgang Mayrhuber. During this three-year tenure, he consolidated the company's point-to-point services with Germanwings to counter budget airline competition and oversaw the sale of British Midland International to the International Airlines Group. He left the position in 2013 during a restructuring phase.

Corporate Governance and Board Membership

Beyond executive roles, Franz has maintained an extensive presence on various supervisory and advisory boards. In 2011, he joined the board of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche, subsequently transitioning to chairman. His board service history is expansive, encompassing JetBlue, Stadler Rail, Zurich Insurance Group, and Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. As of 2026, he holds the position of Chair of the Supervisory Board at Deutsche Bahn. His advisory involvement spans public and private sectors, including roles with Deutsche Flugsicherung, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and several academic institutions, such as the University of St. Gallen and the University of Zurich.
