Formative Years and Military Service
Born in Beijing in 1952, Chen was the son of director Chen Huai'ai and screenwriter Liu Yanchi. His early life was marked by the upheaval of the Cultural Revolution, during which he joined the Red Guards and denounced his father. Following this period, he served as a sent-down youth in the Xishuangbanna Agricultural Reclamation Bureau and later enlisted in the People's Liberation Army. In 1978, he enrolled at the Beijing Film Academy, completing his studies in 1982.

Upon graduation, Chen joined the Guangxi Film Studio. His directorial debut, Yellow Earth (1984), served as a cornerstone of the Fifth Generation movement, utilizing stark visual imagery to explore Chinese cultural heritage. He expanded his repertoire with The Big Parade (1986) and King of the Children (1987). During this decade, he also appeared as an actor in Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987) and spent time as a visiting scholar at the New York University Film School.
International Recognition and Evolving Style
The success of Farewell My Concubine established Chen as a global director, leading to later projects like Temptress Moon (1996) and the historical epic The Emperor and the Assassin (1999). His career subsequently spanned various genres, including the English-language thriller Killing Me Softly (2002) and the fantasy production The Promise (2005). More recently, he has directed large-scale works such as Legend of the Demon Cat (2017) and co-directed the high-grossing production The Battle at Lake Changjin (2021).
