Chen Jingrun: The Man Who Came Closest to Goldbach
Few problems in mathematics are as easy to state and as stubborn to prove as Goldbach's conjecture: that every even number greater than two is the sum of two primes. For more than two and a half centuries it resisted every assault. The closest anyone has ever come was the work of a frail, self-effacing Chinese mathematician named Chen Jingrun (1933–1996), whose single theorem turned him into one of the most celebrated scientific figures in modern China.
The '1 + 2' Theorem
In 1966 Chen announced what is now known simply as Chen's theorem: every sufficiently large even number can be written as the sum of a prime and a number that is either a prime or the product of two primes — the result mathematicians shorthand as '1 + 2.' He completed the full, dense proof in 1973, working through enormous analytic difficulty with the sieve methods of analytic number theory. More than half a century later, no one has improved on it; '1 + 2' remains the frontier of progress toward Goldbach.
A Life Against the Odds
Chen worked for years in extraordinarily difficult circumstances — in poor health, during the upheaval of the Cultural Revolution, reportedly calculating in a tiny room by the light of a kerosene lamp, filling sacks with draft paper. His devotion to a single, seemingly abstract problem became, in the eyes of his countrymen, a parable about the value of pure thought. The mathematician Hua Luogeng recognized his talent early and helped bring him to the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
National Icon
In 1978 the writer Xu Chi published a celebrated piece of literary reportage titled 'Goldbach's Conjecture,' which made Chen Jingrun famous across China and helped restore public esteem for science and scholarship after years of turmoil. He was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and remains, decades after his death, a symbol of quiet, relentless intellectual courage.
Legacy
Chen Jingrun's name is permanently attached to the deepest known result on one of mathematics' oldest open questions. An asteroid bears his name, and generations of Chinese students still encounter his story as their first glimpse of what a life devoted to mathematics can mean.
