Scientific Education and Research
Born in 1952 in Nioro du Sahel, Diarra pursued higher education across several institutions. He studied mathematics, physics, and analytic mechanics at the University of Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris, followed by further academic advancement at Howard University, where he earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering and a doctorate in mechanical engineering. His technical expertise facilitated his recruitment into NASA programs operated by the California Institute of Technology. During this period, he contributed to the Magellan mission to Venus, the Ulysses mission to the Sun, the Galileo mission to Jupiter, and the Mars Observer and Pathfinder initiatives. He later served as the director of education and public outreach for the Mars Exploration program.

Beyond his research duties, Diarra engaged with international development and private industry. He founded the Pathfinder Foundation in 1999 to focus on educational initiatives in Africa and established a solar energy laboratory in Bamako in 2002. His corporate experience included an executive position at the Microsoft Corporation, where he served as chairman of Microsoft Africa from 2006 to 2011. He also held leadership roles as the CEO of the African Virtual University in Kenya and served as a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO between 2000 and 2001. In December 2013, he was appointed chairman of the African law firm alliance, ALN.
Political Transition and Resignation
In March 2011, Diarra launched the Rally for the Development of Mali with the intention of contesting the presidential election. Following the March 2012 coup d'état, he was appointed interim Prime Minister on 17 April 2012, tasked with restoring civilian governance. His administration consisted of a 24-member government primarily composed of technocrats, though key security portfolios remained under the influence of the military junta. His tenure ended on 11 December 2012. After being arrested at his home in Bamako by soldiers acting under the orders of Captain Amadou Sanogo, he appeared on state television at 4 a.m. to announce his resignation.
