Born María Isabel Anita Carmen de Jesús Vargas Lizano, she endured a difficult childhood in Costa Rica following her parents' divorce. After relocating to Mexico, she spent her early years as a street artist. She eventually obtained Mexican citizenship and became a fixture in the burgeoning entertainment industry, notably performing at the La Perla restaurant in Acapulco during the late 1950s.

Vargas approached the ranchera genre differently than her contemporaries. While traditional performances featured mariachi accompaniment, she stripped the arrangements down to only voice and guitar. She frequently manipulated the tempo of her songs to heighten dramatic tension. Her professional debut album, Noche Bohemia, arrived in 1961 with the support of José Alfredo Jiménez. Throughout her career, she recorded over 80 albums.
Gender and Public Identity
Throughout her life, Vargas challenged rigid gender norms by wearing pants, charro suits, and ponchos. She consistently refused to alter the pronouns in love songs written by men, singing them from her own perspective. Though her personal life and sexuality were frequently discussed in artistic circles, she did not publicly address her identity until the 2002 publication of her autobiography.
Retirement and Resurgence
Alcoholism forced Vargas into a lengthy period of withdrawal from the stage. She credited a family who sheltered her in 1970 with helping her recover. She resumed her career in 1991 at the club El Hábito in Mexico City. Her international profile grew during this period, leading to a notable 2003 performance at Carnegie Hall, which was documented on the album Chavela at Carnegie Hall.
