The threat of Nazi intervention became tangible when two Gestapo executives arrived at the residence to locate Edeltrud’s fiancé. Fritz provided false information, claiming the man was not present. At that time, he was residing in Prague with his brothers, successfully avoiding initial detection.
Intervention at the Vienna Police Department
When the brothers of Edeltrud’s fiancé arrived in Vienna from Prague, the risk to their safety escalated significantly. Fritz took direct action by contacting an officer at the Vienna Police Department. She successfully convinced the official to destroy the files that officially incriminated the fiancé, effectively removing the paper trail used for state persecution. Beyond this administrative sabotage, she arranged various hiding places for the brothers throughout the city to keep them out of custody.
Legacy and Recognition
The State of Israel, through Yad Vashem, awarded Fritz the title of Righteous Among the Nations in 1978. This honor highlighted her role as a civilian who utilized her position to thwart systemic violence. She remained in Austria for the duration of her life, eventually passing away in Vienna on 23 September 2003 at the age of 85.
