Cary Elwes

British actor (born 1962)

Ivan Simon Cary Elwes began his career as a production assistant on major film sets, including Superman, before making his acting debut in 1984. He subsequently secured a wide variety of roles across international cinema and television, including the 1987 film The Princess Bride, eventually expanding his work to include screenwriting, voice acting, and film production.

Early Life and Education

Born on 26 October 1962 in Westminster, London, he was the youngest son of portrait painter Dominick Elwes and interior designer Tessa Kennedy. Following his parents' divorce and his father's death, he attended Harrow School and later moved to the United States to study at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. During this period, he refined his craft at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and the Actors Studio.

Film Career Transitions

His debut in Marek Kanievska’s Another Country led to a series of notable projects, including the historical drama Lady Jane and the cult classic The Princess Bride, in which he played Westley. Throughout the 1990s, he maintained a steady film presence with diverse roles in Glory, Days of Thunder, and the parody Robin Hood: Men in Tights. He later gained commercial success in the horror genre through the Saw series, portraying Dr. Lawrence Gordon.

Television and Other Media

In addition to film, he transitioned into television roles, appearing in programs such as Seinfeld, The X-Files, and From the Earth to the Moon. His career has also featured contributions to series like Stranger Things, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Knuckles. Beyond performance, he authored a 2014 memoir titled As You Wish, which chronicles his experiences filming The Princess Bride.
