Early Career and Education
Born in 1965 in Marechal Hermes, Rio de Janeiro, Saldanha initially pursued studies in computer science. He shifted his focus to animation after recognizing the potential of CGI. He attended Carmel High School before moving to Manhattan to enroll in the School of Visual Arts. While completing his MFA in 1993, he created two award-winning film shorts and met instructor Chris Wedge, who recruited him to join Blue Sky Studios.

Saldanha began his professional tenure at Blue Sky Studios in 1993, working on visual effects and commercials. He transitioned to feature films by co-directing the 2002 hit Ice Age, which set a March opening weekend record of 46.3 million dollars. He subsequently co-directed Robots in 2005 and took sole directorial control for the sequels Ice Age: The Meltdown and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
Production Deals and Recent Projects
In 2013, Saldanha established BottleCap Productions after signing an exclusive deal with 20th Century Fox. His later work included the 2014 release Rio 2 and the 2017 film Ferdinand, which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. After joining Sony Pictures Animation in 2021, he directed the 2024 film Harold and the Purple Crayon, which marked his return to features after a seven-year hiatus.
