Academic and Theological Foundation
Born in Lima on 28 February 1950, Castillo pursued initial studies at the National University of San Marcos between 1968 and 1973, where he earned a bachelor's degree in social sciences. During this period, he engaged with the National Union of Catholic Students under Gustavo Gutiérrez. He later attended the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, securing bachelor's degrees in philosophy in 1979 and theology in 1983. He completed a doctorate in dogmatic theology in 1987.

Ordained a priest on 15 July 1984 by Cardinal Juan Landázuri Ricketts, Castillo returned to Peru in 1987. He served as an assessor for the National Union of Catholic Students until 1998 and held various parish roles spanning several decades. Simultaneously, he maintained a long-standing academic career at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Though faculty members faced suspension in 2013, he continued his teaching duties in morals and Christian social thought until his episcopal appointment.
Archiepiscopal Duties and Cardinals Rank
Upon his 2019 installation as Archbishop of Lima, Castillo assumed the role of Grand Chancellor of the Faculty of Civil and Canon Theology. His leadership within the Peruvian Episcopal Conference included directing relations with the Church and serving on university councils. In December 2024, the Pope appointed him cardinal-priest of Santa Maria delle Grazie a Casal Boccone, and he subsequently participated as a cardinal elector in the 2025 papal conclave.
