Camila Vallejo emerged as a central figure in Chilean politics during the 2011 student protests, where she served as president of the University of Chile Student Federation. Her activism against educational commodification shifted her from a campus organizer into a parliamentary representative, eventually leading to her 2022 appointment as the Minister General Secretariat of Government.
Academic and Formative Years
Born in Santiago in 1988, Vallejo was raised by parents who were active members of the Communist Party. She attended Colegio Raimapu before enrolling at the University of Chile in 2006 to study geography. She earned her degree in 2013 with a thesis focusing on the social geography of risk in various Chilean communes, graduating with the highest distinction. In 2007, she joined the Communist Youth of Chile.

Vallejo began her governance career as a counselor for the University of Chile Student Federation in 2008. By November 2010, she was elected president of the organization, becoming the second woman to lead the 105-year-old union. Her role as a national spokesperson during the 2011 protests prompted the Supreme Court of Chile to mandate police protection for her due to credible death threats.
Parliamentary Tenure
In 2013, Vallejo secured a seat in the Chamber of Deputies, representing District 26 with over 43 percent of the vote. As the youngest parliamentarian at the time, she joined a cohort of former student activists dubbed the student bench. During her two terms, she held positions on commissions for environment, natural resources, and education. She played a significant role in advocating for legislation to reduce the work week to 40 hours.
Ministerial Service and Government Role
In January 2022, President Gabriel Boric appointed Vallejo as Minister General Secretariat of Government, marking the first time a member of the Communist Party held the portfolio. Her duties included serving as the administration's official spokesperson and managing social recovery and pension reform agendas. Her tenure was punctuated by a brief prenatal leave ending in July 2025.
