Buhari Syed Abdur Rahman founded ETA Star, an enterprise that eventually employed over 54,000 individuals across sixteen distinct industry sectors globally.
Early Career and Global Expansion
Born in 1927 in Kilakarai, India, Rahman began his professional life in Colombo, Sri Lanka, working for diamond merchants. He eventually established the Precious Trading Company in Hong Kong in 1954 and later founded the Amana Group. By 1973, he partnered with Abdullah Al-Ghurair to launch the Emirates Trading Agency in Dubai, which became the flagship of his business interests. His portfolio grew to include West Asia Maritime, Buhari Group, and Transcar India.

His company, East Coast Constructions and Industries, established in 1962, transformed the architectural landscape of Chennai. The firm was responsible for constructing key landmarks, including the Gemini and Kodambakkam flyovers, the Chepauk Stadium, the Chennai Citi Centre, the Apollo Hospital complex on Greams Road, and the Valluvar Kottam. The organization also completed the Marina Lighthouse and the Government General Hospital.
Educational and Social Philanthropy
Rahman viewed education as a primary vehicle for socio-economic improvement. He founded B. S. Abdur Rahman University, formerly known as Crescent Engineering College, and the Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women. His charitable work was conducted through the Seethakathi Trust and the Zakaat Fund Foundation, which focused on providing financial support to economically weaker populations and maintaining multiple children’s homes across Tamil Nadu.
Healthcare and Honours
In the insurance sector, he founded Star Health and Allied Insurance, the first stand-alone health insurer in India, in partnership with the Oman Insurance Company. For his contributions to education, healthcare, and social welfare, Sathyabama University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2005. He was also recognized as one of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the world.
