Following the sudden resignation of Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2004, Supreme Court president Boniface Alexandre assumed the role of provisional president of Haiti. This transition occurred during a period of intense instability, placing him at the helm of a nation struggling to organize democratic elections while navigating an armed conflict that had overrun much of the northern territory.
Early Career and Judicial Rise
Born in Ganthier in 1936, Alexandre received his secondary education at the Lycée Alexandre Pétion in Port-au-Prince. Raised by his uncle, former prime minister Martial Célestin, he pursued a career in law. He practiced at a Port-au-Prince firm for 25 years, gaining a reputation for integrity. After briefly fleeing to Ganthier to escape the Tonton Macoute, he returned to the legal field, joining the Court of Appeals in the late 1980s. By 1990, he held a seat on the Supreme Court, eventually becoming its president in 2002.

Alexandre took office on 29 February 2004, following the departure of President Aristide. His installation adhered to the constitutional succession rules, though it lacked formal legislative approval due to the expiration of parliamentary terms. He immediately requested international intervention, leading to the deployment of the Multinational Interim Force and the subsequent United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti. During this tenure, he focused on working with a Tripartite Council and a seven-member Conseil des sages to establish a transitional government led by Prime Minister Gérard Latortue.
Legislative Challenges and Election
The transitional administration faced significant difficulties maintaining security and order, with reports of extrajudicial violence and systemic dysfunction within the judiciary. Alexandre characterized his own role as largely symbolic, deferring executive authority to Latortue while prioritizing the transition to democratic governance. He engaged with the United Nations General Assembly in 2005 to secure support for the electoral process, eventually facilitating the transition of power to René Préval on 14 May 2006.
Constitutional Reform and Later Years
After leaving the presidency, Alexandre returned to academia as a law professor. In 2020, President Jovenel Moïse appointed him to head the Independent Advisory Committee charged with drafting a new constitution. He submitted a controversial proposal to acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry in September 2021. Following the escalation of gang violence in Port-au-Prince, Alexandre largely withdrew from public life. He died in the capital on 4 August 2023, and was honored by the state for his long career in the judiciary and legal education.
