A 1963 law graduate from the University of Coimbra, Boaventura de Sousa Santos expanded his academic trajectory to West Berlin and Yale University. Born in 1940 in Coimbra, Portugal, his career spans decades as a sociologist, teacher, lawyer, poet, and philosopher, deeply influencing global discourse on social movements, epistemology, and the sociology of law.
Academic Foundations and Research
After receiving his law degree in 1963, Santos pursued a post-graduate diploma in jurisprudence at the Free University of Berlin in 1965. Between 1969 and 1973, he completed doctoral studies in the sociology of law at Yale University. Upon his return to Portugal, he co-founded the School of Economics of the University of Coimbra in 1973, establishing a sociology course. In 1978, he launched the Centre for Social Studies at the same institution, which served as a hub for his extensive international research projects across locations including India, South Africa, Mozambique, and Brazil.

Beginning in the mid-1980s, Santos shifted his perspective toward non-Western methodologies, focusing on the anti-imperial South. His work promotes cognitive justice and counter-hegemonic globalization, concepts central to the World Social Forum. This research evolved into the ALICE project, funded by an European Research Council Advanced Grant. This initiative aimed to move beyond Eurocentric education, arguing that Western academic structures often fail to integrate lessons from the broader global experience.
Professional Recognition and Allegations
Throughout his career, Santos received numerous distinctions, including the Premio México de Ciencia y Tecnología in 2010 and the Adam Podgórecki Prize. He holds honorary doctorates from the University of La Coruña and Paris 8 University, and is a Grand Officer of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword. In April 2023, he became the subject of public scrutiny following allegations of sexual, moral, and labour harassment detailed by three former researchers from the Centre for Social Studies.
