Benjamin Charles Harper, born in Pomona in 1969, established his career as a versatile singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Influenced early by a 1978 Bob Marley performance and his family’s music store in Claremont, California, he gained international recognition through an eclectic sound blending folk, blues, rock, soul, and reggae while refining his distinct slide guitar technique.
Formative Musical Foundation
Growing up in California, Harper was shaped by the Folk Music Center and Museum, which was owned by his maternal grandparents. This environment provided direct exposure to folk and blues traditions. By his early teenage years, he began performing publicly and eventually mastered the Weissenborn slide guitar. His professional path gained momentum when he toured with Taj Mahal, appearing on the 1990 album Follow the Drinking Gourd.
