The 2024 presidential campaign in Senegal concluded with a historic first-round victory for Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who secured over 54 percent of the vote. His ascent to the presidency followed a period of intense political instability, including his own detention on charges of inciting insurrection and contempt of court just months prior to his election.
Background and Education
Born in 1980 in N’Diaganiao, Faye belongs to the Serer ethnic group. His upbringing occurred within a family with a history of political engagement; his father, Samba Faye, was an active member of the Socialist Party of Senegal. Faye pursued higher education at Université Cheikh Anta Diop, where he earned a law degree. He subsequently enrolled at the National School of Administration of Senegal in 2004, a path that led him to a career as a tax official within the national Tax and Estates department.

While working in the tax department, Faye formed a close professional and political alliance with Ousmane Sonko. The two collaborated extensively through the Taxes and Estates Union, which Sonko founded. Faye became a central figure in the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF), eventually assuming the role of general secretary in 2021 after Sonko faced legal allegations. During the 2022 legislative elections, Faye played a key role in organizing the Liberate the People alliance, which secured 56 seats in the national assembly.
Detention and Election
Faye was arrested in April 2023 outside his office in Dakar following social media criticism of the judicial system. His detention continued until March 2024, when the government released him alongside Sonko as part of a broader amnesty initiative intended to stabilize the country following protests over an attempted election delay. Despite the prior banning of PASTEF, Faye successfully campaigned as an independent candidate, benefiting from the withdrawal of other opposition figures and an endorsement from the Senegalese Democratic Party.
Inauguration and Policy
Inaugurated on 2 April 2024, Faye immediately appointed Sonko as Prime Minister. His administration has prioritized anti-corruption initiatives, economic reform, and the review of energy contracts. Analysts have noted a distinct shift in governance style compared to the administration of his predecessor, Macky Sall, particularly regarding the restoration of political freedoms and a departure from previous illiberal policies.
