Ban Ki-moon

8th Secretary-General of the United Nations

Ban Ki-moon (born 1944) is the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations. He was born in Eumseong County on 13 June 1944.

Ban held office as United Nations Secretary-General (2007–2017), Foreign minister of South Korea (2004–2006), chairperson of the Ethics Commission of the International Olympic Committee (from 2017) and ambassador of South Korea to Austria. He worked in international relations. He was attached to United Nations (2007–2017).

Ban received honorary doctor of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (2015), Emblem of Unity, Order of Friendship (2016), Collar of the Spanish Order of the Civil Merit (2016) and Grand Cross 1st class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2016). He appeared at World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2014, World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2013, World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2015 and World Government Summit 2015. He was elected to ABLF alumni network and The Elders. He studied at Seoul National University, John F. Kennedy School of Government and Chungju High School.

Ban is recorded as following Confucianism.
