Professional Beginnings
Born in Asker in 1854, Balthazar Lange received his formal training at Leibniz University Hannover. His early career focused on the practical requirements of a rapidly expanding rail network. During his three-year tenure with the Norwegian State Railways, he provided architectural designs for multiple station buildings across the Østfold and Vestfold regions, including sites at Skoppum, Stokke, Sandefjord, and Porsgrunn.

Lange expanded his scope beyond railway engineering to ecclesiastical and commercial structures. He drafted the plans for Uranienborg Church in 1880, a project that predated his later successes. By 1894, he gained recognition for the Holmenkollen sanatorium, a building constructed in the distinctive dragon style. The facility, which currently operates as the Holmenkollen Park Hotel, remains one of his most recognized contributions to the national landscape.
Public Service and Recognition
From 1898 until 1920, Lange served as the city architect, a period during which he designed numerous schools to meet the needs of a growing urban population. His contributions to the field were formally acknowledged when he was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour. Following a career spanning several decades, he died in Oslo in 1937 at the age of 83.
