Anfangsgründe der Wundarzneikunst, a comprehensive seven-volume treatise on the treatment of wounds, stands as one of the significant contributions to medical literature authored by August Gottlieb Richter. Operating from the University of Göttingen, he helped formalize surgical standards during a period when clinical observation emerged as a primary method for advancing hospital-based healthcare and medical education.
Academic Career at Göttingen
Born in 1742 in Zörbig, Richter completed his medical education at the University of Göttingen, receiving his doctorate there in 1764. He maintained a long-term affiliation with the institution, eventually securing a position as professor ordinarius in 1771. His professional life remained centered in Göttingen, where he balanced his responsibilities as a university teacher with extensive work as a surgeon, physician, internist, and ophthalmologist.

Richter established a reputation for systematic documentation within his field. Between 1771 and 1797, he served as the editor of the Chirugische Bibliothek, a fifteen-volume journal recognized as the first of its kind in Germany for surgical reporting. His research encompassed diverse medical areas, including a 1773 treatise focused on cataract extraction techniques. His literary output further included an extensive two-volume work on fractures published in the late 1770s, as well as his posthumously released nine-volume Specielle Therapie.
Clinical Legacy
The medical term Richter's hernia derives from his specific clinical identification of a strangulated hernia affecting only a portion of the bowel wall's circumference. Unlike typical obstructions, this condition occurs without total intestinal blockage. His membership in the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony reflected his standing within the international scientific community before his death in 1812.
