Academic Formation
Gutzmer began his formal education at the Friedrichswerder Gymnasium between 1870 and 1881. His university studies took him to the Frederick William University in Berlin from 1884 to 1887. He later advanced his specialization at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, where he studied from 1887 until 1893.

Following his doctorate, Gutzmer held several academic appointments. He taught at the Technische Universität Berlin from 1894 to 1896, followed by a tenure at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg from 1896 to 1899. He later served as a professor at the University of Jena between 1899 and 1905, before returning to Halle-Wittenberg to serve as a professor from 1905 until his death in 1924. During his final years at Halle, he acted as rector from 1914 to 1915 and served as chairperson from 1921 to 1924.
Professional Recognition and Membership
Gutzmer was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. His contributions to the academic community and mathematics were recognized through state honors, including the Order of the Red Eagle 4th Class in 1908 and the 3rd Class Order of the Crown in 1915. He is buried at the St. Laurentius church.
