Ponnappa's partnership with Jwala Gutta yielded significant results on the global stage. In 2010, the duo secured a gold medal at the South Asian Games in both team and mixed doubles events. Their performance at the 2010 Commonwealth Games marked a milestone, as they became the first Indian pair to capture gold in the women's doubles. By 2011, they achieved further recognition by winning a bronze medal at the BWF World Championships in London, becoming the first Indian women to reach the podium at that competition.

Ponnappa represented India in multiple Olympic Games.
