Ashton Fletcher Irwin, born in Hornsby in 1994, emerged as a central figure in Australian pop rock as the drummer for 5 Seconds of Summer. Since joining the group in 2011, he has contributed to a body of work that has surpassed 7 billion streams and sold over 10 million albums worldwide.
Formative Years and Musical Development
Raised in New South Wales, Irwin grew up in Richmond and Windsor, attending Richmond High School until his graduation in 2012. His introduction to percussion began at age nine, guided by his stepfather. Before his rise to international success, Irwin gained experience in a jazz-funk ensemble titled Swallow the Goldfish and briefly pursued music studies at a TAFE college.

In 2011, Michael Clifford invited Irwin to collaborate with Luke Hemmings and Calum Hood. The quartet initially gained traction by uploading song covers to YouTube, eventually securing a publishing contract with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. The band’s studio output includes 5 Seconds of Summer, Sounds Good Feels Good, Youngblood, Calm, 5SOS5, and Everyone's a Star!.
Solo Endeavors
Irwin expanded his creative scope beyond his band commitments with the 2020 release of his debut solo record, Superbloom, introduced by the single Skinny Skinny. He followed this with his second solo project, Blood on the Drums, in 2024. This later collection featured the single Straight to Your Heart, an alt-pop composition produced in partnership with John Feldmann.
Personal Advocacy and Lifestyle
Publicly documenting his journey with sobriety, Irwin has been open regarding his previous struggles with alcoholism. During a 2019 tour, he utilized social media to share his routine of pre-show ice baths as a personal commitment to his recovery. Outside of his professional activities, he has acquired real estate in the Hollywood Hills and West Hollywood.
