Artem Dolgopyat

Artem Dolgopyat is the Israeli artistic gymnast who became Olympic and world champion on the floor exercise — the most decorated gymnast in his country's history.

Artem Dolgopyat: Israel's Olympic Champion of the Floor

When Artem Dolgopyat landed his final tumbling pass at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and the score confirmed gold, an entire country erupted. It was only the second Olympic gold medal in Israel's history — and the first by an Israeli man in any sport. The gymnast who delivered it had taken a long, demanding road to the top of a brutally difficult discipline, and he would go on to become the most decorated artistic gymnast his country has ever produced.

From Ukraine to Israel

Artem Dolgopyat was born on 16 April 1997 in Dnipro, Ukraine, and immigrated to Israel as a teenager. He brought with him the foundations of the formidable Eastern European gymnastics tradition, and in Israel he found the coaching and support to refine it into something world-class. He specialised in the floor exercise — the most explosive and spectacular of the men's apparatus, where tumbling difficulty and clean landings decide everything.

World and Olympic Champion

Dolgopyat's rise was marked by a steady accumulation of major-championship medals before he reached the summit. He won a World Championship silver, then established himself as one of the best floor workers on the planet. At the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, he won the gold medal on floor — a national landmark that made him a household name in Israel overnight.

He was not finished. In 2023 he became world champion on floor, adding the sport's other supreme title to his Olympic crown, and at the Paris Olympics in 2024 he won the silver medal, confirming his place among the most consistent floor specialists of his era. Across World and European Championships he amassed a collection of medals unmatched by any Israeli gymnast.

A National Symbol

Dolgopyat's success carried meaning beyond sport. His Olympic gold made him a symbol of Israeli achievement and, given his immigrant background, of the country's capacity to turn new arrivals into champions. He was celebrated at the highest levels of the state and became one of the most recognisable athletes in the country.

Why This Matters

Dolgopyat matters as the man who put Israel on the map in a sport it had never won at the highest level. His Tokyo gold was historic — the country's first by a man — and his subsequent world title and Olympic silver proved it was no fluke but the product of sustained, elite excellence.

In a discipline as unforgiving as men's artistic gymnastics, where careers are short and margins are tiny, Dolgopyat strung together a decade at the very top. He is the most decorated gymnast his country has produced, and the athlete who showed that an Israeli could be the best in the world on the floor — and stay there.
