The melody for the popular song Julekveldsvisa was composed in 1944 by Arnljot Høyland, a mathematician whose professional life spanned military intelligence, academia, and statistical research. Born in 1924, he maintained a dual identity as a musical creator and an rigorous analyst of mathematical statistics within the Norwegian educational system for several decades.
Military and Academic Formation
Between 1945 and 1946, and again from 1949 to 1954, Høyland served in the Norwegian Intelligence Service. His academic development began at the University of Oslo, where he studied from 1947 to 1952. He subsequently expanded his international research experience through two distinct periods of study at the University of California, Berkeley, occurring first between 1957 and 1959, and later from 1962 to 1963.

His formal teaching career commenced at the University of Oslo, where he held positions from 1954 to 1957 and returned to lecture between 1959 and 1965. In 1965, he moved to the Norwegian Institute of Technology, where he remained until 1994. During this tenure, he attained the position of Professor of mathematical statistics. His contributions to the field included the publication of the two-volume textbook Sannsynlighetsregning og statistisk metodelære in 1972 and 1973.
Societal Contributions and Recognition
Høyland was an active member of professional associations, including the International Statistical Institute, the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, and the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences. His professional contributions were acknowledged by the Norwegian state in 1995 when he was appointed Knight First Class of the Order of St. Olav. He died in 2002 in Trondheim and is buried at Tilfredshet kirkegård.
