Academic Formation
Arnfinn Laudal completed his secondary schooling in Mandal in 1954. He commenced his higher education at the University of Oslo that same year. His studies expanded internationally in 1957 when he moved to the École Normale Supérieure. By 1958, he returned to Norway to complete his cand.real. degree at the University of Oslo.

Between 1959 and 1962, Laudal served as a research fellow at Columbia University and the Institut Henri Poincaré. His career at the University of Oslo began in 1962 with a position as a lecturer. He advanced to the role of docent in 1964 and held a professorship from 1985 until his retirement in 2003.
Institutional Contributions
Laudal contributed to the development of mathematical infrastructure beyond his immediate research. He participated in the founding of the Abel Prize and maintained involvement with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. He holds membership in the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Angers in 2019. Beyond his academic career, he served as a deputy member of the Bærum municipal council representing the Socialist Left Party.
