Arne Korsmo

Norwegian architect (1900–1968)

Villa Stenersen, completed between 1937 and 1939 for collector Rolf Stenersen, stands as a primary example of functionalist design in Norway. Arne Korsmo, the architect behind this residence, served as a conduit for international modernism, shaping the country's mid-century aesthetic through both his prolific practice and his extensive academic career at the Norwegian Institute of Technology.

Early Career and Partnerships

Following his 1926 graduation from the Norwegian Institute of Technology, Korsmo gained practical experience with firms led by Finn Bryn and Johan Ellefsen. In 1928, he entered a professional partnership with Sverre Aasland. During their collaboration, they completed designs for approximately 50 villas, including Lille Frøens vei, Havna Allé 1-14, and Villa Dammann. This period solidified his reputation within Norwegian functionalism.

Institutional Influence and PAGON

Korsmo held teaching positions at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry starting in 1935 and later became a professor at the Norwegian Institute of Technology. His commitment to the movement culminated in 1950 when he organized the Norwegian group of the Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne, known as PAGON. Alongside colleagues such as Sverre Fehn and Geir Grung, he worked to implement progressive architectural standards across Norway.

Exhibitions and Design Work

Beyond residential architecture, Korsmo contributed to international exhibitions, including the 1937 Norway pavilion in Paris and the Milan X Triennale in 1954. His design output often involved collaboration with his second wife, Grete Prytz Kittelsen. Later projects included the 1961–63 renovation of the Britannia Hotel in Trondheim, executed with Terje Moe. His efforts at the Milan Triennale earned him both a gold medal and a Grand Prix.

Honors and Legacy

Korsmo received the Houen Foundation Award twice, once in 1937 and again in 1939 for the Havna allé housing project. In 1939, he received the French Legion of Honor. He died in 1968 in Cusco and was interred at Vestre gravlund. The Henie-Onstad Art Centre held a memorial exhibition of his work in 1972.
