Born in Rotterdam in 1947, Burgmans pursued business administration studies at Nyenrode Business University. By 1991, he held responsibility for Unilever's personal care products. Following his oversight of the Europe Committee, he was appointed vice chairman of Unilever N.V. in 1998, eventually chairing both Unilever N.V. and PLC until he stepped down in May 2007, succeeded by Michael Treschow.
