Antonis Samaras served as Prime Minister of Greece from 2012 to 2015, navigating the country through a period of intense economic instability. A career politician with deep ties to the New Democracy party, he maintained a lengthy presence in the Hellenic Parliament while frequently shifting the trajectory of Greek political alliances through his own party formations and legislative departures.
Early Development and Academic Background
Born in Athens in 1951, Samaras was educated at Athens College before pursuing his higher education. He graduated from Amherst College in 1974 with a degree in economics, followed by an MBA from Harvard University in 1976. During his tenure at Amherst, he lived in the same dormitory as future rival George Papandreou.
Entry into National Governance
Samaras began his national political career in 1989 as the Minister of Finance. He subsequently transitioned to the role of Minister for Foreign Affairs, serving from 1989 to 1990 and again from 1990 to 1992. During his first period as Foreign Minister, he became central to the emerging Macedonia naming dispute, eventually presenting conditions for a resolution that faced rejection from both President Konstantinos Karamanlis and Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis.

The defection of an MP to his new organization triggered the collapse of the Konstantinos Mitsotakis government that same year. Political Spring saw electoral activity in the 1993 general election and the 1994 European Parliament elections but experienced a decline by 1996. By 2004, Samaras dissolved his party to rejoin New Democracy.
Leadership and Prime Ministership
Upon returning to New Democracy, Samaras served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2007. In 2009, he was appointed Minister of Culture and later successfully vied for the presidency of New Democracy. He led the party until 2015, serving as Prime Minister from 2012. Throughout this time, he remained a consistent parliamentary representative for the region of Messenia.
Recent Political Stance
Samaras continued his legislative work as a member of parliament representing Messenia following his term as Prime Minister. However, in November 2024, his relationship with New Democracy shifted significantly when he was expelled from the party’s parliamentary group and the party itself, citing his public criticism of the foreign policy pursued by the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
