Formative Years and Early Career
Born in Mulhouse on 21 March 1982, Antar Yahia grew up in a family that had emigrated from the Aurès region of Algeria. After starting at Racing Club de Belfort, he moved to the FC Sochaux-Montbéliard academy at fourteen. When denied a professional contract in 2000, he joined Internazionale. His senior career began in 2001 when he moved on loan to the Corsican side SC Bastia, debuting against Lyon in January 2002.

Following four years in Corsica, Yahia moved to OGC Nice in 2005. By 2007, he transitioned to the Bundesliga, joining VfL Bochum after impressing during training trials. He became a fixture in their central defense, playing over 100 matches and eventually earning an extension through 2014. Despite his attachment to the club, he pursued other opportunities following the team's relegation, later signing with 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 2012. His career path also included stints at Platanias in Greece and a return to France with Angers SCO.
International Eligibility and Service
Yahia initially represented France at the under-16 and under-18 levels. He became the first footballer to utilize the 2004 FIFA eligibility rule changes to switch his national allegiance. After debuting for the Algerian under-23 side in 2004, he transitioned to the senior team. Over 53 appearances, he scored six goals, including his notable play-off winner. He captained the national squad during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and retired from international football on 1 May 2012.
Awards and Personal Life
Recognition for his performance arrived in 2010 when he received the Algerian Player of the Year award for 2009. That same year, he was voted Arab Player of the Year in an MBC television poll, securing 48 percent of the vote. Yahia is a practicing Muslim. He is fluent in Arabic, French, German, Italian, English, and Spanish. He is married to Karima Ziani, the twin sister of fellow player Karim Ziani.
