Antanas Smetona served twice as the President of the Republic of Lithuania, initially from 1919 to 1920 and later as the nation's head of state between 1926 and 1940. Early Education and Political Foundation
Born in 1874 in Užulėnis, Smetona pursued his secondary and higher education at Academia Petrina and Saint Petersburg State University. His academic path reflected the cultural constraints of the era, as he navigated institutions within the Russian Empire while maintaining an interest in Lithuanian nationalism. He later attended Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, refining the ideological base that would characterize his career as an editor and political advocate.

Smetona occupied the presidency during two distinct phases of Lithuanian statehood. His first term began in 1919 and lasted until 1920, placing him at the helm of the country shortly after the post-World War I transition. He returned to power in 1926, serving as the head of state until 1940. During these years, he held positions at Vytautas Magnus University and Vilnius University, bridging the gap between his scholarly background and his role in government.
Awards and Final Years
Throughout his public life, Smetona received numerous decorations, including the Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of the White Rose of Finland in 1932, the Grand Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great, and the Grand Cross of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas. He was also a recipient of the 1st Class of the Order of the Cross of the Eagle, the Grand Cross of the Order of the Cross of Vytis, the Grand Cordon of the Order of Leopold, and the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Pius IX. Following the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in 1940, he went into exile, eventually settling in Cleveland, where he died in 1944. He is buried at All Souls Cemetery.
