Cinematic Success
Duarte achieved international recognition with his 1962 feature, O Pagador de Promessas, also known as Keeper of Promises. This project secured the Golden Palm in Cannes, standing as the inaugural winner from the Southern Hemisphere. Beyond France, the production earned honors for best film and musical score at the San Francisco International Film Festival and received best film awards in Acapulco, Cartagena, Karlovy Vary, and Edinburgh. The feature also secured an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1964, he directed Vereda da Salvação, which earned a nomination for the Golden Bear at the 15th Berlin International Film Festival.

Brazil conferred significant honors upon Duarte during his later years. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva presented him with the Order of Cultural Merit in 2008, while Governor José Serra awarded him the Order of Ipiranga. He held honorary citizenship in cities including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and his birthplace, Salto. In 2008, he established the Instituto Anselmo Duarte with his son, Ricardo, to restore 26 of his films for distribution across 10,000 Brazilian cultural institutions. Salto honored his contributions by opening the Centro Cultural e Educacional Anselmo Duarte, a facility featuring an amphitheater and a permanent display of his original Golden Palm.
Final Years
Duarte lived with Alzheimer's disease for five years prior to his passing. During his final months, he endured a sequence of medical challenges, including a heart attack, kidney failure, and anemia, alongside the surgical removal of a bladder tumor. Following a hemorrhagic stroke in October 2009, he died on 7 November 2009, in São Paulo. His career, which spanned decades of work as an actor, editor, and director, concluded in the same city where he was born.
