Early Athletic Development
Before committing to cycling, van Vleuten engaged in gymnastics, football, and horse riding. A knee injury sustained while playing football led a doctor to suggest cycling as an alternative activity in 2005. She balanced her early life with academic pursuits, earning a master's degree in epidemiology from the University of Wageningen in 2007. She initially competed for amateur teams before leaving an office role in 2010 to pursue professional sport full-time.

Her professional breakthrough arrived in 2011 when she won the UCI Women's Road World Cup. During the 2016 Summer Olympics, she suffered a significant crash while leading the road race, resulting in a concussion and lumbar spinal fractures. She recovered within ten days and returned to competition one month later. She later secured a silver medal in the road race and a gold medal in the time trial at the 2020 Olympic Games.
Dominance in Grand Tours
Van Vleuten established a record by winning all three major women's cycling Grand Tour equivalents. She claimed the Giro Donne title four times and secured the first editions of the Tour de France Femmes and La Vuelta Femenina. In 2022, she became the first woman to achieve the Giro–Tour double in a single season. Her career concluded with numerous victories in monuments such as the Tour of Flanders, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, and Strade Bianche.
Recognition and Retirement
Throughout her career, she received several honors, including the Keetie van Oosten-Hage Trophy for Dutch cyclist of the year. In 2022, she received the Vélo d'Or award. Her contributions to Dutch sport were further acknowledged in 2023 when she was appointed Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Following a final season with the Movistar Team, she concluded her professional cycling career in 2023.
