Early Life in Norway and Sweden
Born on 15 November 1945 in Bjørkåsen, Norway, to Synni Lyngstad and German soldier Alfred Haase, she was raised by her grandmother, Arntine, following the death of her mother in Sweden. In 1949, the family moved to Torshälla, where Lyngstad attended school. During her formative years, she maintained contact with her mother's family in Norway, although she grew up believing her father had died during the war.

Lyngstad began her professional career at age 13, performing with the Evald Ek's Orchestra. She gained broader recognition after winning the 1967 'New Faces' talent competition in Stockholm with the song 'En ledig dag'. This victory earned her a contract with EMI Svenska and a high-profile television appearance on Hylands Hörna. By 1969, she was a regular presence on the Swedish music circuit, participating in Melodifestivalen and collaborating with musicians like Benny Andersson.
Transition to ABBA and Recognition
Following the release of her debut album, 'Frida', in 1971, she joined the group that would eventually become ABBA. Alongside bandmates including Benny Andersson and Agnetha Fältskog, she contributed to a legacy of chart-topping success. Decades later, her contributions were formally recognized when she was awarded the Commander 1st class of the Order of Vasa in 2024.
