Angelique Kidjo

Angélique Kidjo has established a multifaceted career as a composer, performer, and humanitarian, rooted in a multilingual upbringing in Ouidah, Benin. Since relocating to Paris in 1983, she has bridged traditional West African musical structures with global genres, earning international recognition through collaborations with diverse artists and a sustained commitment to advocacy through her long-standing role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

Early Development and Relocation

Born in 1960, Kidjo was raised in a household where she was exposed to theatre and traditional performance from a young age. By age six, she joined her mother's theatre troupe and later performed in the school band Les Sphinx. After recording the album Pretty in her twenties, political instability prompted her to move to Paris in 1983. There, she studied at the CIM jazz school while working various jobs to support her tuition.

Musical Evolution and Key Collaborations

In Paris, Kidjo fronted the jazz-rock ensemble Pili Pili before beginning a solo career. Her breakthrough in the international market arrived after signing with Island Records in 1991, leading to the release of Logozo. Throughout her discography, including the trilogy comprising Oremi, Black Ivory Soul, and Oyaya!, she has explored the African diaspora's musical influences. She has worked extensively with producer Jean Hebrail, incorporating diverse instruments and guests like Carlos Santana, Branford Marsalis, and Peter Gabriel across numerous albums.

Global Recognition and Humanitarian Work

Kidjo has received multiple honors, including the Ambassador of Conscience Award in 2016 and the Officer of the Legion of Honour in 2020. In 2002, she became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, a position that complements her public profile. Her contributions to music and culture have been marked by appearances at major events, such as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and her inclusion on lists such as BBC 100 Women and Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.
