The tennis career of Angelique Kerber reached its zenith on 12 September 2016 when she ascended to the world No. 1 ranking, making her the oldest player to achieve the top spot for the first time. Over her professional tenure, she claimed 14 WTA Tour-level titles, including three major championships, and secured a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Early Development and Transition to Professional Play

Born in 1988 in Bremen to parents Sławomir Kerber and Beata, Kerber grew up in Kiel. She began playing tennis at the age of three while living in a training academy where her parents worked. Although she is naturally right-handed, she adopted a left-handed playing style. Her professional career launched in 2003, and by 2007, she achieved her first top-100 season finish. She spent several years competing on the ITF circuit, securing 11 titles between 2004 and 2009 before establishing herself on the main WTA Tour.

Ascent to the Top Tier

The breakthrough for the German athlete arrived in 2011 during the US Open, where she entered ranked 92nd and advanced to the semifinals. This performance elevated her into the top 50. By 2012, her trajectory shifted upward after she secured her maiden WTA title in Paris by defeating Marion Bartoli. That same year, she reached the semifinals at Wimbledon and entered the top 10 rankings for the first time following a strong performance at the Indian Wells Open.

Major Titles and Olympic Success

Kerber experienced a dominant 2016 season, winning the Australian Open and the US Open. These victories were supplemented by her success on the international stage, where she earned a silver medal in women's singles at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She maintained her momentum in 2018 by winning the Wimbledon Championships. Throughout her career, she held the world No. 1 ranking for a total of 34 weeks, concluding 2016 as the year-end No. 1.

Retirement from Professional Tennis

After a period of maternity leave, Kerber returned to the sport but concluded her professional journey following the 2024 Paris Olympics. Her career spanned more than two decades, beginning as a junior and ending as a multi-time major champion. She represented Germany in international team competitions, including the Billie Jean King Cup, and participated in both the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.
