Early Development and Television Origins
Lau completed his secondary education at Ho Lap College. In 1980, he entered the actor training program at TVB, securing a contract with the network shortly thereafter. His profile rose quickly through the 1982 series The Emissary and his portrayal of Yang Guo in The Return of the Condor Heroes. During this period, he was designated as one of the Five Tiger Generals of TVB.

After a contract dispute led to his blacklisting by TVB, Lau shifted his focus toward film. He appeared in notable projects including Boat People, The Truth, and As Tears Go By. In 1991, he founded his own production entity, Teamwork Motion Pictures, later known as Focus Group Holdings Limited. His production credits include Made in Hong Kong and A Simple Life. In 2004, he received the Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actor for his performance in Infernal Affairs III, an accolade he won again in 2011.
Music Career and Industry Records
Lau debuted as a singer with the 1985 album Just Know I Only Love You. He secured mainstream success with the 1990 release Would It Be Possible. Throughout the 1990s, his work established him as one of the Cantopop Four Heavenly Kings. His output led to multiple honors, including a 2000 entry in the Guinness World Records for the most awards won by a Cantopop male artist.
Civic Contributions and Later Recognition
Beyond his artistic career, Lau has held the position of justice of the peace. His public service includes acting as a goodwill ambassador for the 2008 Summer Paralympics.
