Andrzej Sapkowski

The Witcher, a short story submitted to a competition in 1986, launched the career of Andrzej Sapkowski and introduced the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. Beyond the localized success of his early prose, Sapkowski has emerged as a globally recognized figure in fantasy literature, with his narratives translated into 37 languages and selling over 30 million copies worldwide.

Early Career and Education

Born in 1948 in Łódź, Poland, Sapkowski attended the XXI Liceum Ogólnokształcące before studying at the University of Łódź. His professional life initially existed outside of creative fiction, as he worked as a senior sales representative for a foreign trade company. His entry into literature began through translation, focusing specifically on science fiction texts before he transitioned into writing his own original narratives.

Literary Development

Sapkowski utilized his background in business and marketing to approach the literary market strategically. His initial submission to the magazine Fantastyka earned third prize and catalyzed a series that eventually spanned eight novels and three short story collections. His work is noted for integrating Slavic mythology, often contrasting morally complex settings with a protagonist who adheres to a personal, rigid ethical code.

The Hussite Trilogy

Following his success with The Witcher, Sapkowski explored historical fiction through his Hussite Trilogy, published between 2002 and 2006. Set during the 15th-century Hussite Wars, the series focuses on Reinmar of Bielawa. While distinct from his fantasy cycle, this work is considered by many to be his magnum opus, offering a grittier engagement with historical tradition. In 2024, he returned to his established world with the publication of the novel Rozdroże Kruków, translated internationally in 2025 as Crossroads of Ravens.

Commercial Disputes

In 2018, Sapkowski engaged in a legal disagreement with the developer CD Projekt regarding royalties from video games based on his intellectual property. Although he had originally sold the rights for a single sum, he sought additional compensation under Polish copyright law. Both parties reached an amicable settlement in December 2019 to preserve their professional relationship, though the specific financial details remain undisclosed.
