Early Life and War Years
Born in Kraków in 1921, Munk completed his gymnasium education in June 1939. Throughout the German occupation, he lived in Warsaw under an assumed identity, performing manual labor as a construction worker. In 1944, he participated in the Warsaw Uprising. Following the city's capitulation, he relocated to Kraków and later to Kasprowy Wierch, where he served as a janitor at a cable railway facility.

After the conclusion of World War II, Munk enrolled at the Warsaw University of Technology to study architecture. He eventually transferred to the University of Warsaw to study law, but poor health led him to leave his studies. He settled in Łódź, where he attended the National Film School, graduating in 1951. He initially worked as a cameraman for the Polish Film Chronicle, known as Polska Kronika Filmowa. He joined the Polish United Workers' Party in 1948 but faced expulsion in 1952 due to allegations of blameworthy behaviour.
Directing Feature Films
Munk began lecturing at his alma mater in 1957. His filmography includes the 1956 production Man on the Tracks, the 1957 work Eroica, which explored themes of heroism, and the 1960 film Bad Luck, a tragicomedy concerning a Polish everyman. His final project, Passenger, was in production when he died in a head-on collision with a truck near Łowicz on 20 September 1961. The film was eventually released in an incomplete state in 1963.
