Andrzej Łuczak

Andrzej Łuczak achieved a peak chess rating of 2440 in 1979, ranking as the second-best player in Poland at the time. Beyond the chessboard, he has sustained a lengthy career as a mathematician, securing a scientific professorship degree while conducting research in probability theory at his alma mater, the University of Łódź.

Early Competitive Chess

Born in Łódź in 1948, Łuczak began his tournament career during the 1960s. He secured a silver medal at the 1967 Polish Junior Chess Championship in Wisła within the U20 age group. His team contributions were significant, earning a gold medal at the 1965 Polish Team Chess Championship in Kraków while representing Start Łódź, alongside a bronze in 1964 and silvers in 1963 and 1966.

Professional Chess Career

By 1979, Łuczak earned the title of International Master. His individual tournament record includes a 1975 victory in Warsaw and third-place finishes at the Kazimierz Makarczyk memorial in 1978 and 1984. He competed in the Polish Chess Championship finals in 1977 and 1979 and earned a silver medal at the 1981 Polish Blitz Chess Championship in Bydgoszcz. He remained active in team blitz competitions throughout the 1980s, winning gold with the club Anilana Łódź in 1987 and silver in 1988.

Academic Contributions

Łuczak holds a scientific professorship degree and specializes in probability theory. Based at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Łódź, he has been a faculty member since 1970. His professional lineage is linked to the Mathematics Genealogy Project as a fourth-degree descendant of Stefan Banach. His academic focus remains centered on probability theory and statistics.
