Academic Foundation and Early Research
After graduating from the Royal Institute of Technology in 1963, Martin-Löf pursued graduate studies in optimization. His research took him to the United States between 1967 and 1968 for studies at MIT, followed by a tenure as a Research Associate at Rockefeller University in New York City from 1970 to 1971. During this period, he concentrated on probability theory and its applications within statistical mechanics. He earned his Ph.D. at the Royal Institute of Technology in 1973.

Following his doctoral degree, Martin-Löf served as a docent in Uppsala and Stockholm for a decade. In the 1980s, he transitioned into the insurance sector, collaborating with the company Folksam. His work there involved the development of theoretical frameworks for controlling insurance movements. This experience shifted his professional emphasis toward insurance mathematics, a field he would continue to influence for the remainder of his academic career.
Professorship at Stockholm University
In 1987, Martin-Löf joined Stockholm University as a professor, holding a position in insurance mathematics and mathematical statistics within the Department of Mathematics. As a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, he contributed to the theoretical and applied aspects of his field. He was the brother of Per Martin-Löf, a professor of mathematics and philosophy, and Johan Martin-Löf, an engineering physicist focused on space technology.
