Born in 1949 in Sorengo, Switzerland, Arborelius spent his formative years in Lund. He converted to the Catholic faith at age 20. Following this decision, he entered the Discalced Carmelites in 1971 at the Norraby monastery near Tågarp. His academic trajectory included studies at Lund University and the Pontifical Theological Faculty Teresianum in Rome, where he earned a doctoral degree. Appointed by Pope John Paul II, Arborelius assumed leadership of the Diocese of Stockholm in December 1998. He succeeded Hubert Brandenburg as the sole leader of the only Catholic diocese in the country. During his tenure, he has navigated the complexities of a secularized society while overseeing a diverse community of immigrants and converts. From 2005 to 2015, he served as the President of the Nordic Bishops' Conference.
Cardinalate and Global Roles
Pope Francis elevated Arborelius to the rank of cardinal on 28 June 2017, the first Scandinavian to attain this status in history.
