Anatoly Libgober

American mathematician

The 1977 doctoral dissertation completed at Tel Aviv University under Boris Moishezon marked the academic entry of Anatoly Libgober into the global mathematical community. Born in Moscow in 1949, Libgober eventually moved to the United States, developing a body of research focused on algebraic geometry and the topology of algebraic varieties that spanned several decades of institutional academic service.

Academic Trajectory and Appointments

After departing the Soviet Union in 1973, Libgober pursued doctoral studies in Israel. His early career included postdoctoral research at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Over the following decades, he held visiting positions at institutions including l'Institut des hautes études scientifiques in Bures-sur-Yvette, France, the Max Planck Institute in Bonn, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, and both Harvard and Columbia University. He concluded his formal career as a Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he maintained his faculty post until retiring in 2010.

Algebraic Geometry and Topology Contributions

Libgober initially investigated the diffeomorphism type of complete intersections within complex projective space, establishing connections between Chern numbers and Hodge numbers. His research introduced the use of the Alexander polynomial to examine the fundamental groups of complements to plane algebraic curves. This development resulted in the divisibility theorem and clarified the interplay between fundamental groups and the local invariants of singularities, specifically those defined by quasi-adjunction constants. He furthered these studies by introducing characteristic varieties of fundamental groups, which served as a multivariable extension of Alexander polynomials applicable to the homotopy groups of complements to hypersurfaces.

Interactions with Theoretical Physics

Beginning in the early 1990s, Libgober shifted research focus toward the intersection of algebraic geometry and physics. He generated mirror symmetry predictions regarding the enumeration of rational curves on complete intersections in projective spaces. Additionally, he contributed to the development of the theory concerning the elliptic genus of singular algebraic varieties, utilizing his background in topology to address problems relevant to geometric physics.
