The Gunst School of Fine Arts opened in 1886 as the first private institution of its kind in Russia, providing six-year courses for men and women. Anatoly Ottovich Gunst founded this enterprise with the support of the Rumyantsev Museum, though professional opposition from state institutions eventually forced its closure in 1891.
Early Education and Career
Born in Moscow in 1858 to a family of Russified Germans, Anatoly Gunst entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1878. He graduated in 1882. During this period, he gained practical experience as a construction assistant on the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. He began his teaching career at the Komissarov Technical School and later spent two years, from 1882 to 1884, teaching at Moscow State School 57. His professional development included study trips to Austria, Germany, and Italy.

Gunst joined the Moscow Architectural Society in 1894. He moved into public service two years later upon his appointment as a district architect. His role in regional development continued in 1904 when he became a supernumerary technician within the Construction Department of the Moscow Governorate. Between 1905 and 1906, he served on the municipal Construction Council, contributing to the oversight of building projects in the capital.
Performing Arts and Later Life
Beyond his architectural practice, Gunst was an amateur actor involved in the Drama Salon Society, performing alongside Maria Yermolova and Alexander Yuzhin. He was a member of the League of Performing Arts Lovers and collaborated with Yevgeny Vakhtangov to establish the Studio of Dramatic Art, an organization that evolved into the Vakhtangov Theatre in 1921. He also performed at the Maly Theatre in 1917. Gunst died in Moscow in 1919 and was interred at the Vagankovo Cemetery.
