Academic Foundations and Early Career
Pillay earned a Bachelor in Mathematics and Philosophy from Balliol College, University of Oxford, in 1973. He continued his studies at the University of London, securing a master's degree in 1974 before completing his PhD in 1978 under the supervision of Wilfrid Hodges at Bedford College. During 1978, he engaged in research as a visiting scientist at Paris Diderot University. His initial teaching appointments included positions at the University of Manchester and McGill University.

In 1983, Pillay joined the University of Notre Dame as an assistant professor. He progressed to associate professor in 1986 and achieved the rank of full professor in 1988. From 1996 to 2006, he served as the Swanlund Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he currently holds the status of Professor Emeritus. Since 2005, he has occupied the Chair of Mathematical Logic at the University of Leeds. Throughout his career, he has served as a visiting scholar at the Fields Institute, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, and the Isaac Newton Institute.
Mathematical Contributions
Pillay's research focuses on stability theory and the application of model theory to diverse mathematical domains. His work examines Nash manifolds, differential algebra, the classification of compact complex manifolds, and diophantine geometry. He has authored several texts, including An introduction to stability theory (1983) and Geometric Stability Theory (1996). He also co-edited Model theory, algebra and geometry in 2000.
Professional Recognition
Pillay has received numerous honors for his scholarly output. He was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zürich in 1994 and delivered the Tarski Lectures in 2009. In 2011, he delivered the Gödel Lecture. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society and was named a Fellow of the society in 2013.
