Early Education and Career Beginnings
Anand Mahindra attended the Cathedral and John Connon School before completing secondary education at the Lawrence School, Lovedale. In 1989, Mahindra became President and Deputy Managing Director of Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd. During this period, he directed the group's expansion into hospitality management and real estate development. By 1991, he joined the board of the flagship entity, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. Following his tenure as Managing Director starting in 1997 and Vice Chairman in 2001, he assumed the role of Chairman of the Mahindra Group in 2012, succeeding his uncle, Keshub Mahindra.
Diverse Business Ventures and Interests
Beyond the core automotive and farm equipment business, Mahindra participated in several media and financial ventures. In 2014, he partnered with Charu Sharma to launch the Pro Kabaddi League. That same year, he co-founded the television channel EPIC, eventually becoming its sole owner by 2016. He also served as a co-promoter of Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd, later transitioned to the name Kotak Mahindra Bank, before stepping down as a promoter in 2013.
Social Impact and Public Recognition
In 1996, he founded Nanhi Kali, an organization focused on providing primary education to underprivileged girls in India. His business and social leadership earned him global recognition, including being named among the world's 50 greatest leaders by Fortune Magazine. In 2020, the Indian government awarded him the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honor in the country.
