Ana Maria Popescu

The fencing career of Ana Maria Popescu began in the Rahova district of Bucharest, where the young athlete pivoted from tennis to the épée after discovering a lack of competitive opportunities for left-handed players. By age fifteen, she secured her first senior national championship, marking the start of a progression that led to five Olympic appearances.

Early Development and Training

Introduced to the sport by her brother at the CSA Steaua București fencing hall, Popescu specialized in the épée because it was the only left-handed weapon available. At thirteen, she relocated to Craiova to train at the Junior Olympic Centre while attending the Petrache-Trișcu Sports High School. Her rapid development was marked by a Romanian championship title earned just six months after she began formal training.

International Breakthrough

Popescu established herself globally by winning gold at the 2002 Junior World Championships in Antalya. Her early senior career included a bronze medal at the 2002 World Championships in Lisbon, an achievement she reached without her coach present. She qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens by earning a silver medal at a zonal tournament in Ghent, though she placed 16th in her debut Olympic event.

Professional and Military Affiliation

In 2001, she joined the CSA Steaua club, which operates under the Ministry of National Defence of Romania. While she holds the rank of major, she maintains a full-time commitment to her sporting career rather than active military service. Beyond competition, she has engaged in voice acting for the Romanian dub of Rise of the Guardians and supported AITA, a charitable organization for autistic children.
