The Federal University of Pará served as the academic foundation for Ana Julia Carepa, who graduated with a degree in architecture between 1976 and 1980. This professional training occurred long before her transition into a lengthy career as a politician and civil servant within the Brazilian state of Pará and in the capital, Brasília.
Professional Beginnings
Following her university studies, Carepa entered the workforce in 1981 at the Bank of Brazil. During this period, she also took on the role of director for the Pará department of the Brazilian Institute of Architects for two years. Her involvement with the banking sector continued to develop throughout the 1990s as she represented Pará employees at the National Council of Banco do Brasil Employees in 1991.

A member of the Workers' Party since 1982, Carepa transitioned from architecture into legislative service in 1992. She secured a seat on the Belém City Council, where she served as the party leader and chaired the Public Administration Committee from 1993 to 1995. Her career advanced rapidly when she was elected federal deputy in 1994, leading her to resign her municipal post to join the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies in 1995.
Executive Roles and Public Office
In 1996, Carepa joined a coalition ticket with Edmilson Rodrigues to become the deputy mayor of Belém, securing the position with over 57 percent of the vote in the second round. She later sought a seat as a senator for Pará in 1998, though she was unsuccessful despite receiving over 560,000 votes. Her executive career eventually reached the office of the governor of Pará, making her the first woman to hold that specific state leadership role.
Later Administrative Appointments
After her time in elected office, Carepa remained involved in institutional administration. In December 2011, she accepted a nomination to serve as an administrative director at Brasilcap. This appointment to the bank, which focused on capitalization bonds, was approved by the Superintendence of Private Insurance, a regulatory body under the Ministry of Finance, for a three-year term.
