Amaury Vassili

The debut album of French tenor Amaury Vassili, titled Vincerò, achieved double platinum status in France with over 250,000 copies sold following its 2009 release. This record established his career as a professional opera singer, blending classical techniques with pop sensibilities to create a distinct style he identifies as lyrical pop.

Early Development and Contests

Born in 1989 in Rouen, Upper Normandy, Vassili began formal vocal training at age 9 at a music school established by Albert and Elizabeth Amsallem. By age 14, he entered his first singing competition, performing Jacques Brel’s Amsterdam. Although a subsequent performance of Michel Sardou’s Les Lacs du Connemara did not advance him to the final, the response from the audience solidified his intent to pursue a stage career. In 2004, he secured first place in the Coupe de France de la chanson française.

International Recognition and Discography

Following the commercial success of his first studio album, Vincerò, Vassili released his second album, Canterò, in November 2010. His work expanded beyond French borders, reaching audiences in Canada, South Africa, and South Korea. This international reach characterizes his position as a singer operating within the contemporary constraints of the global music industry, where digital distribution and streaming have fundamentally altered traditional sales patterns.

Eurovision Participation

On 27 January 2011, France Télévisions announced that Vassili would represent France at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Düsseldorf, Germany. He performed the song Sognu entirely in Corsican, marking only the second time a French entry had utilized that language since Patrick Fiori’s 1993 performance. Vassili finished the contest in 15th place with a total of 82 points. He later returned to the Eurovision stage in 2012 to serve as the official spokesperson for France, presenting the country's voting results.

Recent Television Appearances

Vassili maintained a presence in French media through participation in the reality television series The Masked Singer. Competing as the Turtle, he became the first male contestant to win the French iteration of the program.
