This decision followed the pairing of Nourine with Israeli competitor Tohar Butbul for a potential second-round match. Benikhlef and Nourine stated that their withdrawal was intended as a gesture of support for the Palestinian cause, citing their refusal to compete against an Israeli athlete.
Disciplinary Sanctions
The International Judo Federation responded to the withdrawal on 24 July 2021, issuing an immediate suspension for both Benikhlef and Nourine. The federation cited the Olympic Charter, specifically rule 50.2, which prohibits political demonstrations at Olympic venues. The federation asserted that the action violated the moral code of judo, including principles of neutrality, respect, and solidarity. Consequently, the pair were sent home from Tokyo. Following a formal investigation by the IJF Disciplinary Commission, Benikhlef received a 10-year suspension in September 2021, preventing him from professional involvement in the sport until July 2031.
