Soprano Amalie Materna debuted in 1865 at the Thalia Theatre in Graz, eventually becoming a pillar of the Vienna State Opera company for a quarter-century. Born in 1844 in Sankt Georgen an der Stiefing, this dramatic singer earned recognition for her powerful voice and a timbre that remained bright and youthful throughout her extensive career.
Early Career and Vienna Success
After her professional debut in Graz, Materna moved to the Carltheater in Vienna, where she performed operettas alongside her husband, the actor Karl Friedrich. Her transition to grand opera occurred in 1869 when she joined the Vienna State Opera, debuting as Selika in L'Africaine. She secured her position as a fixture of the Vienna court, later delivering notable performances such as Amneris in the city's inaugural production of Aida in 1874 and the title role in the 1875 premiere of Goldmark's Die Königin von Saba.

Materna gained significant acclaim for her interpretations of Richard Wagner's work. She performed as Brünnhilde during the first complete Ring Cycle at Bayreuth in 1876, a performance she subsequently brought to Berlin’s Victoria Theatre in 1881. She also participated in the first Vienna performances of Die Walküre in 1877 and Siegfried in 1878. In 1882, she originated the role of Kundry in Parsifal at Bayreuth, maintaining this role at the festival for nearly a decade until 1891.
International Engagements and Retirement
In 1884, Materna embarked on a United States tour with colleagues Hermann Winkelmann and Emil Scaria. This led to her debut at the Metropolitan Opera on 5 January 1885, where she portrayed Elisabeth in Tannhäuser. Her tenure at the Met included roles such as Valentine in Les Huguenots and Rachel in La juive. Following her return to Vienna in 1885, she performed until her final stage appearance as Elisabeth on 31 December 1894. In her retirement, she taught singing in Vienna and made a final public performance in 1913, singing Kundry at a Wagner centenary concert.
