Amadou Gon Coulibaly occupied the office of Prime Minister of Ivory Coast from January 2017 until his death in July 2020. An engineer by training, he maintained a continuous presence in national legislative and executive structures for nearly three decades, transitioning from early advisory roles to high-level governance and international financial oversight within the state apparatus.
Early Career and Legislative Service
Born in Abidjan in 1959, Coulibaly entered public service during the 1990s, functioning as a technical adviser to then-Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara. His legislative career included two distinct periods as a member of the National Assembly, serving first from 1995 to 1999 and returning to the body in 2011 to serve until his passing. During this period, he also managed local administrative responsibilities as the Mayor of Korhogo.

Coulibaly held the position of Minister of Agriculture from October 2002 until February 2010. Following Alassane Ouattara’s ascent to the presidency in 2011, Coulibaly served as Secretary General of the Presidency for six years. Upon his appointment as Prime Minister on 10 January 2017, he oversaw a cabinet reduction from 35 to 28 ministers. By July 2017, he also assumed direct control over the ministerial portfolio for the budget. In 2018, following the dissolution of the government, he was re-appointed to lead the cabinet formation process.
Party Leadership and International Appointments
Within the Rally of the Republicans, the ruling party, Coulibaly served as First Vice-President following his designation at the Third Ordinary Congress in September 2017. His administrative portfolio extended to international financial institutions; he acted as an ex officio member of the board of governors for the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, including the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency.
Medical History and Final Months
Coulibaly's career was marked by ongoing health challenges, including heart surgery performed in 2012. In May 2020, he traveled to France for medical examinations and recovery, returning to his home country on 2 July. Less than a week later, on 8 July 2020, he suffered a health crisis during a weekly cabinet meeting. He died in Abidjan at the age of 61. At the time of his death, he was the designated candidate for the 2020 presidential election.
